Does life imitates art, or does art imitates life? As a formerly incarcerated person who spent 20 years in the correctional institution, I think art is an impression of life. My artistic inspiration comes from personal experiences, often unpleasant ones. Art has become a channel for me to weather the most difficult times of my life and it also gave me sense of purpose and meaning. My arts are an expression of my emotion, perception, and spirit--that is where I feel most in touch with life.
In many ways, it helps me tell my story.
Commissioned pieces are particularly special because my clients are allowing me to tell their story in a creative and tangible way. Seeing people's reactions as they are presented with a portrait of their favorite pets or loved ones is quite poignant. Every portrait, especially portraits of pets or loved ones that have passed, are extremely sentimental. It is one of my favorite subjects to paint.
